Visuomotor channels: Their integration in goal-directed prehension
نویسنده
چکیده
The visuomotor transformations for producing a grasping movement imply simultaneous control of dierent visual mechanisms. The size, orientation and 3D characteristics of the object have to be encoded for the selection of the appropriate opposition space, within which the opposition forces will be applied on the object surface. These mechanisms also have to combine with those of the transport of the hand to the object location. Finally, biomechanical constraints impose categorical visuomotor decisions for positioning the opposition space according to object changes in size, orientation and spatial location. This paper examines possible interactions between the specialized structures for visuomotor transformation and the internal model that adapts prehension to its goals. Ó 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. Brain Area V6A: A Cognitive Model for an Embodied Artificial Intelligence
We found that single neurons in the parietal area V6A of the macaque brain deal with all the components of reaching and grasping actions: locating in space the object target of action, directing the eyes toward it, sensing where the arm is in space, directing the arm toward the spatial location where the object is in order to reach and grasp it, adapting the grip to the object shape and size. T...
متن کاملPerceptuo-motor interactions during prehension movements.
Adaptive behavior relies on the integration of perceptual and motor processes. In this study, we aimed at characterizing the cerebral processes underlying perceptuo-motor interactions evoked during prehension movements in healthy humans, as measured by means of functional magnetic resonance imaging. We manipulated the viewing conditions (binocular or monocular) during planning of a prehension m...
متن کاملDifferent Evolutionary Origins for the Reach and the Grasp: An Explanation for Dual Visuomotor Channels in Primate Parietofrontal Cortex
The Dual Visuomotor Channel Theory proposes that manual prehension consists of two temporally integrated movements, each subserved by distinct visuomotor pathways in occipitoparietofrontal cortex. The Reach is mediated by a dorsomedial pathway and transports the hand in relation to the target's extrinsic properties (i.e., location and orientation). The Grasp is mediated by a dorsolateral pathwa...

The present study tested the idea that the vis-uomotor systems mediating prehension do not have independent access to pictorial cues processed by perceptual mechanisms. Individuals with visual form agnosia, whose perceptual systems are compromised but who have intact visuomotor control, were examined to determine whether they could use pictorial scene cues to calibrate manual prehension when bi...
متن کاملThe effects of abrupt onset of 2-D and 3-D distractors on prehension movements.
This article includes two experiments aimed at investigating how two-dimensional (2-D) and three-dimensional (3-D) distractors affect the kinematics of prehension and aiming movements in order to understand the attentional processes involved in visuomotor control. In Experiment 1, subjects grasped large targets in the presence of both large and small 3-D distractors and their corresponding 2-D ...
